Location of the Alsberg barracks in Rhineland-Palatinate

The Alsberg barracks in Rennerod has been a Bundeswehr location since its completion in 1969 . It is located northeast of the town of Rennerod in the Westerwald near the intersection of federal highways 54 and 255. It mainly houses the medical regiment 2 with regimental command and six companies . The Bundeswehr location was retained with the 2011 deployment concept . However, the number of military posts was reduced from 720 to 480. The name of the barracks refers to the 652 meter high Westerwald Alsberg near the site.

Station history and occupancy today

After completion of the barracks, the 5th Armored Division's medical battalion moved in on April 30, 1969 . This battalion was set up on August 16, 1956 in the Karfreit barracks in Brannenburg - Degerndorf , Bavaria , and moved to the Augusta barracks in Koblenz on October 29, 1957 . The battalion remained at the Rennerod location until March 31, 1997. In the course of the merger of the divisions with the military area commands , the battalion's subordinate relationship to the military area command IV / 5 changed on April 1, 1994 . Armored Division. On April 1, 1997, the battalion was reclassified to Medical Regiment 5. On July 1, 2001, the military area command IV / 5. Panzerdivision renamed Wehrbereichskommando II and the 5th Panzer Division dissolved on September 30, 2001. Therefore, a renewed change of subordination of the medical regiment 5 to the medical command II took place, which was formed from October 1, 2001 in Diez an der Lahn . The medical regiment 5 was renamed on January 21, 2003 to Lazarettregiment 21. This unit was given the nickname "Westerwald" on September 20, 2008. The hospital regiment was finally transferred to Medical Regiment 2 , which was set up in the barracks from July 1, 2015 and is still located at the site , and dissolved on December 31, 2015.

Also in 1969 the supply battalion 156 was stationed in the barracks. It was assigned to the 15th Panzer Brigade . It emerged from Quartermaster Battalion 5, which was set up in 1957 in Diez an der Lahn in Oranienstein Castle . On April 1, 1959, the name was changed to Supply Battalion 156. With Army Structure III, Supply Battalion 156 was dissolved in 1972 and on October 1, Supply Company 150 and Repair Company 150 were formed at the Rennerod site. Both companies were subordinate to the 15th Panzer Brigade. They remained in the barracks until they were dissolved in 1993 (repair company 150) and 1994 (supply company 150).

The Rennerod driving school group was formed on January 1, 1986 in the barracks and existed until March 31, 1994. On April 1, 1994, the name was changed to the Rennerod Driving Training Center, which existed until December 31, 2003.

Since August 1, 2009, BWI Informationstechnik GmbH Rennerod has also been located in the barracks as the IT service provider for the Bundeswehr.

A security train and security groups 1 to 3 have been housed in the barracks since April 1, 2013.

The dental station (Terr) H 439 and the dentist group 415/1 between April 1, 1981 and December 31, 1998 were set up at the site for medical care between April 1, 1977 and March 31, 1981. From April 1, 1984 to March 31, 1995, a troop doctor was stationed in the barracks and between July 1, 1972 and June 30, 1997, medical area 41/23 was equipped with material. From April 1, 1982 to September 30, 1996, there was also the medical center 415 and between July 1, 2004 and September 30, 2015 the Rennerod medical center.

Between April 1, 2007 and December 31, 2015, reinforcement reserves were in the barracks for the 1st and 2nd companies of the 21st hospital regiment, for the 211 and 212 hospital regiments of the 21st hospital regiment, for the regiment command and from January 1st, 2008 for the Medical equipment of the hospital regiment 21. Further reinforcement reserves existed from January 1, 2007 to September 30, 2015 for the Rennerod medical center. A reinforcement reserve for the district and district liaison commandos Sanitary Regiment 2 has existed since July 1, 2015. In this context, the regional security and support forces of the State Command Hesse also use this infrastructure.

The barracks also served the Rennerod branch of the Westerburg site administration, the Koblenz branch office, the Koblenz Bundeswehr service center with a branch, the 421/302 site telecommunications system and the 412/3 site ammunition defeat.

In 2015, it became known that due to the wave of refugees from Syria , the state of Rhineland-Palatinate had submitted an application for aid to the Bundeswehr for parts of the Alsberg barracks.
