The exact beginnings of the brewing tradition in Altenburger Land cannot be traced. However, in 1256 a ban mile was raised around the city to promote local beers. At the time of the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg there were a total of 59 breweries in the Altenburger Land.

After the first communal brewery was built in Altenburg in 1830, the first brewery was founded on the Großer Teich in 1871 . The brewery in Kauerndorf was built as the town's second brewery in 1872. On July 31, 1871, seven citizens of Altenburg had the idea of founding a joint brewery . The property of the Kauerndorf manor was acquired by the landowner Hermann Herold (1821–1885). Brewing began here in July 1873, initially with brown beer . The Urtyp Hell camp followed in October of the same year. Due to the increased sales, new brewing pans were installed just two years later. This covered the annual production up to 130,000 hectoliters, which was already reached in 1896. In August 1883 the 500,000. Hectoliters of beer sold. In 1898 the brewery received a gold medal and an honorary award from the city of Meerane at the association conference of the Saxon Gastwirtschaftsverein.

In 1901 two other types of beer were created, namely Bavarian and Bohemian beer. The brewing capacity was expanded in 1905 when bottled beer was also supplied to private customers. This also resulted in the expansion of the company. In 1912/1913, the new brewhouse was built according to the technical concept of the engineer Theodor Ganzenmüller from Weihenstephan , which was one of the most modern brewhouses in Europe and had a capacity of 230,000 hectoliters.

In the course of hyperinflation , the Altenburger brewery had to merge with the Gera Brewery Association and then with the Leipzig Brewery to form Reudnitz Riebeck & Co. AG due to economic difficulties .

During the Second World War the output decreased to 30,000 hectoliters in that year by 1949. A year earlier, the brewery became a VEB and in 1968 it was connected to the Leipzig Beverage Combine . Up to 1990, 330,000 hectoliters of beer and non-alcoholic beverages were produced annually. In the same year a cooperation agreement was signed with the Kulmbacher Aktienbrauerei .

After reunification, the Altenburger brewery lost a lot of sales. The East German beer market was saturated with West beer brands. Production fell to almost 10,000 hl. The Leikeim brewery from Altenkunstadt in Upper Franconia then bought the brewery. The brewery strived for a careful modernization without losing the traditional core and its regional ties and thus increased sales. Due to the increasing turnover, new fermentation tanks were purchased in 2003 to replace the fermentation cellars. In 2014 the German Advertising Council criticized a poster campaign by the brewery as discriminating against women. The brewery only partially waived poster advertising, so the advertising council issued a reprimand.

In January 2017, the brewery presented itself with a completely revised brand identity, which makes the connection to the region and eastern Germany clear and makes the beer look more modern and fresher. Nonetheless, the Altenburger brewery sticks to the traditional beer, the beer is still available in resealable swing top bottles, but no longer made of ceramic, but for the sake of the environment made of plastic. The advertising, which was played mainly in the regions of Leipzig, Chemnitz, Dresden and Altenburg, is still humorous and youthful, but dispenses with allusions as in the past. With these investments, the company also tries to further strengthen the Altenburg region, as has already been the case with the large number of support from regional associations.

The managing director Bastian Leikeim will take part in the 2019 World Cup of Beer Sommelier in Rimini as a member of the German national team.

Today's use of the brewery

The brewery received the architecture of its building complex, which is why it is now a listed building. The historic buildings are built in the industrial style of historicism and the brewhouse shows influences from Art Nouveau and Neo-Baroque . For this reason, in addition to producing and bottling various types of beer, the brewery also uses the premises for visitors. The brewery and the historic 5-machine brewery can also be visited while production is running. In addition, the premises of the brewery are used for events and concerts. Among other things, nine clubs have their headquarters on the brewery premises and some couples have already been married.

The Altenburger Brauerei GmbH maintains a museum on the history of beer and local brewing with their meaning and the raw materials and the production of beer.
