The old Marstall is Berlin's only preserved early baroque functional building. The old Marstall is part of the listed building ensemble on the property at Breite Straße 32–37 in Berlin-Mitte .

history

The Marstall was rebuilt from 1665 to 1670 by Michael Mathias Smids based on a design by Johann Gregor Memhardt after a fire on August 27, 1665 destroyed the 15th century building. Although new stables were to be built around 1700 on Unter den Linden and on Schloßplatz , the old stables were expanded to include individual neighboring buildings, including the neighboring Ribbeck House - today the only late Renaissance building in Berlin. Around 1900 both buildings were integrated into the New Marstall by Ernst von Ihne .

The extensive complex for the accommodation and museum presentation of horses, wagons, sledges and dishes of the courtyard enclosed two inland courtyards, one of which was used as a riding arena. In the basement there were numerous stables and coach houses , and an armory above . Service rooms and apartments were located in the front building. In World War II damaged, the entire complex in 1952 has been restored to the 1961st The main decoration of the old Marstall, the tympanum relief and the portal crown, both baroque wood carvings , could not be restored.

In the course of its history, the building complex also housed the first Berlin court theater, the higher appellate court , the chamber of accounts and, since 1920, after the closure of the Marstall, the Berlin city library . In 1995 it was merged with the America Memorial Library to form the Central and State Library of Berlin as an institution, with part of the holdings including the Berlin collections being located in the complex on Breite Straße.
