Culture and leisure

The Music Festival 2005 at the Skin concert

The old town of Winterthur is also the cultural center of the city due to its central function. There are many restaurants, bars and pubs in the old town. At the end of July, the Albanifest, the largest old town festival in Europe, takes place in Winterthur and one month later the Winterthur Music Festival will take place on Steinberggasse for two and a half weeks with concerts in the old town. In addition to these larger events, there are several special markets and festivals throughout the year such as the Winterthur Carnival in February, the Afro-Whitsun Festival in late May or the three-week Christmas market in December.

Architecturally, the whole old town is handsome, especially the town house , built by Gottfried Semper , the town hall , the town church , the main train station , the former weighing house , the house for patience , the house for the sun , the house at the Warteck or the Judd fountain in the Steinberggasse.

Most of the museums are located in the old town: in the historic old town itself, the trade museum with the Kellenberger clock collection on Kirchplatz , the Briner + Kern museum in the town hall passage and the Kunsthalle Winterthur in the Waaghaus. The Oskar Reinhart Museum is located on the edge of the Stadthausstrasse and the local history museum of the same name at the Obertor in Lindengutpark . With the Kunstmuseum Winterthur , Naturmuseum Winterthur and the Münzkabinett , three other museums are only a few meters from the official border of the quarter and thus the old town.

Transport links

The main station of Winterthur is located in the west of the district. All of Winterthur's transport links run together there, with the exception of a city bus route and a few regional bus routes that end at Oberwinterthur train station . All express trains stop at the train station and you can get to Zurich by train in 20 minutes and Zurich Airport in 10 minutes.
