Map of the quarter

Neuwiesen is a district of the city of Winterthur , which is west of the main train station . Together with the old town , Lind , Heiligberg , Tössfeld and Brühlberg quarters, the district forms urban district 1 ( city ).

geography

The Neuwiesen district to the west of the city center is bounded to the east by the main train station and the railway tracks of the Rheinfallbahn , whose curve towards Wülflingen also forms the district boundary. On the other side of the tracks, Neuwiesen borders the Altstadt and Lind quarters. The border in the north forms the former municipal border of the city of Winterthur opposite today's city district of Veltheim , whose district of Blumenau Neuwiesen borders. At the north-western end, after the Püntenanlagen , the district even shares a border with the Oberfeld district of Wülflingen . Towards the south-west, the Eulach forms the natural border with the Brühlberg district over almost its entire length. At the southern border, Neuwiesen also borders the Neuwiesen district along Zürcherstrasse.

The quarter itself is completely on the Eulach gravel plain and is accordingly level. It is relatively dense near the train station and built over without much green space, but it loosens out of town.

education

The Neuwiesen primary school, built in 1876, is located in the center of the quarter . There is a kindergarten of the same name next to the Schützenwiese. In secondary school, the pupils go to the St. Georgen schoolhouse northwest of the main station and thus outside the neighborhood.

In the area of the quarter, the main building of the vocational school in Winterthur is also located on Wülflingerstrasse .

history

In the middle of the 19th century there was not much settlement activity in the area of the quarter. In addition to a mill operated by a water channel and the rifle house at the level of today 's Schützenwiese stadium , there was primarily the laboratory , which began operations in 1778 as the first chemical factory in Switzerland in the Neuwiesen. However, this ceased operations before construction began in the quarter in 1854, and today only a street named after it bears witness to its existence.

The St. Peter and Paul Church, completed in 1868, forms the center of the quarter

The development of the quarter west of the train station was already foreseeable and picked up speed with the building regulations issued in 1862. When the Zurich Cantonal Council approved the Catholic Church in the canton again in the same year with the Zurich Church Law, the city of Winterthur ceded a piece of land in the middle of Neuwiesen to the Catholic community, which then became the first Catholic church of the Church of St. Peter and Paul Erected in modern times in the canton. It should form the center of the new quarter emerging on the drawing board. The church itself was built in several stages. While the shell was already completed in 1868, the interior was not completed until 1883 and the church was finally consecrated in 1897. In 1870, the shooting range that used to be on today's Schützenwiese was relocated to the level of today's Eulachhallen . The Wartstrasse, which runs through the center of the quarter, was built on in the 1870s, and in 1876 the Neuwiesen school building was also built there according to plans by Joseph Bösch . A map from 1885 shows that the area between Schützenstrasse, Salstrasse, Konradstrasse and the train station was built over. One of the driving forces behind the building boom in the 1870s to 1890s was Jakob Ackeret, and a section of Laboratoriumstrasse in the middle of the quarter was later named after him.

The Sulzer skyscraper under construction (1964)

At the beginning of the 20th century, the area between Winterthur and Veltheim was already loosely built over and thus grown together. Another important change for the quarter was the bulging of the Eulach up to Neuwiesenstrasse and the abolition of the Eulach Canal in the area of the quarter at the beginning of the 1910s. At the time of the 1922 municipal association, apart from small areas along Wülflingerstrasse and at Zürcherstrasse, there were no longer any major development gaps in the neighborhood. Further cornerstones of the quarter's development in the 20th century were the cessation of shooting in 1956, which caused a lot of noise in the quarter. In 1964, the Sulzer skyscraper was built next to the Schützenwiese stadium (originally it was even supposed to be a twin skyscraper ), which would be the largest skyscraper in Switzerland for the next 40 years after its construction. Two years later, the opening of the A1 bypass around Winterthur was also likely to have been noticed in the quarter , as all through traffic to Schaffhausen had passed through the quarter up to this point . However, Neuwiesenstrasse continues to cut through as the busiest street in the district. In 1977 the houses on Gertrudstrasse were demolished and the Neuwiesen shopping center was built. In 1983 the first of the two Eulachhallen was built on the site of the former shooting range.

Culture and leisure

Due to the proximity of the quarter to the center of Winterthur, most leisure activities are relatively centrally accessible. In addition, there are several sports facilities next to the Eulach in the green belt in the southwest of the quarter. Right next to the Sulzer high-rise is the Schützenwiese stadium, home to FC Winterthur . Behind the Schützenwiese are the tennis facilities of the TC Schützenwiese , which used to be a section of the football club. Further to the west are the Eulachhallen, home of the two Winterthur handball clubs Pfadi and Yellow . Trade fairs are also held in the Eulachhalle at regular intervals, for example the Winterthur trade fair in November . Between the Eulachhalle and Schützenwiese there is also the Rennweg municipal gym with its outdoor facilities.

Also in the immediate vicinity of the quarter is on the other side of the Eulach der Brühlberg.

Transport links

The main station of Winterthur is located in the east of the district. All of Winterthur's transport links run together there, with the exception of a city bus route and a few regional bus routes that end at Oberwinterthur train station . All express trains stop at the train station and you can get to Zurich by train in 20 minutes and Zurich Airport in 10 minutes. In addition, bus line 2 in the direction of Wülflingen runs along Wülflingerstrasse in the north.

All maps show the same section of the quarter and are therefore comparable.
