The Afro-Whitsun Festival has been held annually on the Whitsun weekend in Winterthur in the canton of Zurich since 1990 . Founded by Daniel Bühler, Tom Keller and Michael Röttker, Afro-Pfingsten has developed into the largest Swiss festival that deals with African and Afro-American cultures. While Daniel Bühler continued to shape the festival until 2018, the other two founding members withdrew in the first years of the festival. Daniel Bühler was responsible for the implementation in 2018 together with Karin Gubler, who took over the management of the festival in full in 2019 and brought Ananda Geissberger to the management team in 2020.

It started with a few courses and a concert by a Senegalese band in front of a handful of spectators. In recent years, Afro-Whitsun has had 50,000–70,000 visitors annually. The program includes concerts, markets, workshops and many other supporting activities.

Concerts

One of the central program items is music from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean . Several major concerts took place in the historic Hall 53 on the Sulzer site , in 2017 the concerts took place in the Alte Kaserne cultural center , and since 2018 the large riding hall in Winterthur has been used. Concerts in various smaller pubs, street artists and free concerts on two open-air stages in the old town of Winterthur complete the program.

Among the artists who performed at the Afro-Pentecost Festival are many well-known names, such as Miriam Makeba , Zap Mama , Youssou N'Dour , Buena Vista Social Club or Johnny Clegg . At the 2009 anniversary edition, Ky-Mani Marley from Jamaica, the Orishas from Cuba and Mamady Keita and Sewa Kan from Guinea performed on the main stage.
