Am Zirkus is the name of a short street in the Berlin district of Mitte . It runs west of Friedrichstrasse and connects Schiffbauerdamm with Reinhardtstrasse .
history
From 1867 to 1868, under the direction of the architect Friedrich Hitzig , then director of the Berliner Immobilien Gesellschaft, was built on the site of a former wood storage and shipbuilding site between Reinhardtstrasse (then: Karlstrasse ) and the Panke estuary on Schiffbauerdamm with the new construction of the first market hall in Berlin and the surrounding area Residential houses an extensive urban development complex. The street was built between 1865 and 1867 to develop this area and was called Markthallenstraße from 1865 to 1891 .
Since the market hall was an economic failure, it was closed the following year. In 1873 the "Markthallen-Circus" (later taken over by Circus Renz ) opened in the building , whereupon the street was renamed: initially Am Circus , since 1903 in the current spelling. In 1918/1919 Hans Poelzig converted it into an expressionist " Great Theater " for Max Reinhard . The hall was later used as the original Friedrichstadt-Palast and demolished in 1985.
The surrounding residential buildings, some of which were destroyed in the Second World War , resulted in a more economical use of the building site. The remaining houses at Am Zirkus 2/3 and 4-6 are listed architectural monuments. Many late classical details of the furnishings such as stucco , doors and, above all, the staircases have been preserved in them.
The Swiss Peach Property Group acquired the site (Am Zirkus 1) from Vivacon and from 2010 to 2014 built yoo Berlin , a building with 87 luxury apartments , a hotel with 311 rooms and commercial space based on designs by Eike Becker . Probably the most expensive luxury apartments in Berlin were built here.
Road layout
The street leads from Schiffbauerdamm past Bertolt-Brecht-Platz in an L-shape around the “yoo Berlin” complex and ends after the bend as a dead end. From here a footpath leads to Bertolt-Brecht-Platz, where the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm , which today houses the Berliner Ensemble, is located. From Reinhardstraße there is a 30 meter connection to the rest of the street.
