The red variety Amaral (Azal Tinto) is an autochthonous variety from Portugal .
Origin, descent
Is an autochthonous red wine from Portugal. The parentage is unknown. According to the DNA analyzes carried out (2011), there is a genetic relationship to the varieties Loureiro, Tinta Castañal and Vinhão. Despite morphological similarities or synonyms, it must not be confused with the varieties Azal Branco, Borraçal, Melhorio, Sousão Galego, Touriga Nacional or Vinhão.
The variety Cainho De Moreira emerged from a natural crossing of Amaral x Albariño ( Alvarinho ) .
distribution
Amaral is mainly represented in the Douro , Minho , Beira Interior Norte and Beira Interior Sul regions . The global cultivation area in 2010 was 92 ha.
Ampelographic varietal characteristics
- The shoot tips are hairy with white wool.
- Young leaves are fluffy and green. Adult leaves are flat and medium-sized. Your stalk bay is V-shaped. The three-lobed leaves have small teeth on their edges.
- The grapes are small to medium in size and conical. The spherical berries are bluish black.
Wine
The grapes are harvested from mid-September to mid-October and produce a very brightly colored red wine with an extremely high proportion of malic acid , which is used as the basis for the red Vinho Verde . The acid content is an important part of the malolactic fermentation of the wine .
