Ambrose Madtha (born November 2, 1955 in Belthangady , † December 8, 2012 in Biankouma ) was a diplomat of the Holy See .

Life

Ambrose Madtha was born in Belthangady near Mangalore , a port city in the southern Indian state of Karnataka . Three siblings were religious. He studied Economics (Master) at Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University and Education (Bachelor) at the University of Lucknow . He then entered the St. Charles Seminary in Nagpur and studied philosophy and theology.

The Bishop of Lucknow , Cecil DeSa , ordained him on March 28, 1982 . He received his doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Urban University in Rome .

In 1990 he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See . He was active at the apostolic nunciatures in Ghana, El Salvador, Georgia, Albania and Taiwan.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on May 8, 2008 titular Archbishop of Naissus and Apostolic Nuncio in the Ivory Coast . The episcopal ordination received his Cardinal Jean-Louis Cardinal Tauran on 27 July 2008; Co- consecrators were Albert D'Souza , Archbishop of Agra , and Gerald John Mathias , Bishop of Lucknow . He was elected doyen of the Ivorian diplomatic corps.

After the 2010/11 election in Ivory Coast, he tried to mediate between the previous ruler Laurent Gbagbo and the election winner Alassane Ouattara . A delicate mission, as Gbagbo was favored by the country's Catholic bishops, but Ouattara comes from the Muslim north. In 2012 he accompanied Ouattara and his wife to an audience with Pope Benedict XVI.

Madtha has always been committed to human rights, dialogue and national reconciliation in Ivory Coast.

Ambrose Madtha died on December 8, 2012 as a result of a car accident in Biankouma near Odienné in the west of the country . The details are not clear.
