Ambrosius Steinegger

Ambrosius II. Steinegger OSB (born April 25, 1833 in Platzers as Johann Markus Steinegger ; † February 3, 1913 in Gries-Quirein ) was an Austrian Benedictine monk . From 1897 until his death he was abbot of the Muri-Gries Abbey near Bozen ( South Tyrol ).

biography

The son of the farmer Joseph Steinegger and Katharina Gamper graduated from high school in Bozen and Meran , followed by a theology degree in Gries. He made his profession in 1854 and was ordained priest in 1856 . As chaplain he was in Gries, Marling and Our Lady in Walde-St. Felix active. In the latter place he worked from 1862 to 1872 as a pastor, then another twenty years in Jenesien , where he founded a hospital. After the Benedictine nuns of Hermetschwil in Switzerland moved their convent to Habsthal inSteingger officiated there as administrator and confessor . From 1894 he was dean in Gries.

On March 23, 1897, Steinegger was elected abbot of Muri and Prior in Gries. A year later he received the Commander's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order , and in 1901 he was elected Vice President of the Swiss Benedictine Congregation . Abbot Ambrosius' term of office was characterized by major construction projects. In 1901/02 he had a teachers' college built next to the collegiate church (closed in 1923 and later used as an agricultural school at times). In 1906 he initiated the restoration and expansion of the collegiate church.
