Anaïs Nin (born February 21, 1903 as Angela Anaïs Juana Antolina Rosa Edelmira Nin y Culmell in Neuilly-sur-Seine near Paris , †  January 14, 1977 in Los Angeles ) was an American writer .

Life

Anaïs Nin was the daughter of the Cuban-Spanish composer and concert pianist Joaquín Nin y Castellanos and the Danish Rosa Culmell y Vigaraud, who had French and Cuban ancestors. When she was eleven years old, her father left the family. The mother then moved to New York with the three children . Anaïs Nin dropped out of school there and worked at times as a model . She tried to process the separation from her father in her diary. Her brother was the composer Joaquín Nin-Culmell .

In 1923 she married the bank clerk Hugh Parker Guiler, who later became known as the film producer Ian Hugo. She moved with him to Paris in 1924. Together with her husband she supported avant-garde artists and got to know Henry Miller , on whose literary work she had a great influence; Philip Kaufman's film Henry & June was made about it in 1990 . She had a long affair with Miller. After the German victory over France in 1940, she returned to the USA. In 1947 a secret marriage followed with Rupert Pole, who was seventeen years his junior. She lived with him in Los Angeles, with Hugh Guiler in New York.

Act

Nin is best known from a literary point of view for her diaries , which she began to write at a young age: novels and erotic stories with extremely explicitly described sexual actions a. are summarized in The Delta of Venus . In the novel A Spy in the House of Love you have a different kind of self-portrait by Anaïs Nin. It complements the picture that has since been made of the friend and supporter of Millers and Artauds .

Biography and fiction mix in her works. Dream life and the unconscious play an essential role; it was strongly influenced by the psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung . Nin studied psychoanalysis with Otto Rank and was treated for a time by Carl Gustav Jung.

In 1974 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters . In 1994 the Venus crater Nin was named after her.
