Anastasia of Brandenburg

Anastasia von Brandenburg (born March 14, 1478 in Ansbach , † July 4, 1534 in Ilmenau ) was a princess of Brandenburg and became Countess of Henneberg by marriage .

Life

Anastasia was the youngest daughter of the Brandenburg Elector Albrecht Achilles (1414–1486) from his second marriage to Anna (1436–1512), daughter of Elector Friedrich II of Saxony .

She married on February 16, 1500 in Neustadt an der Aisch, Count Wilhelm IV of Henneberg-Schleusingen (1478–1559). Nine years before that, her older sister Elisabeth had married a Count from Henneberg. Wilhelm's lavish courtship resulting from the marriage exceeded the income of his country extraordinarily.

Anastasia and Wilhelm lived extremely piously. They went on pilgrimages, supported monasteries and bought indulgences for large sums of money . Duke Albrecht of Prussia , who had a close relationship with the court of his relatives, had once turned to Anastasia, who had 13 children to look after in their marriage, and jokingly informed her that if she had another daughter to marry off, she should give him her send that he would find her a king. Her only unmarried daughter at the time was Margarete, but she lived as a nun in a convent. Margarete was fetched from the monastery, but had to wait another five years until Duke Albrecht actually tried to choose a bridegroom for her, who, given the countess' modest trousseau, was not a king.

Anastasia was buried in the parish church of Schleusingen . Its epitaph was made by the Innsbruck sculptor Siegmund Buchlinger.
