Life

André Bjerke was born in 1918 as the son of the writer Ejlert Bjerke (1887–1963) and his wife Karin Svenson (1891–1964) in today's Oslo district of Aker. His maternal cousin was the author Jens Bjørneboe . In 1946 he married Mette Brun. In 1959 he married the actress Henny Elisabeth Moan , who divorced in 1972. His third wife was Gerd Granholt.

In 1940 he published his first work with Syngende jord , the second followed two years later with Fakkeltog . Most Norwegian writers boycotted the Nazi publishers during World War II. André Bjerkes father, however, agreed to work with them and published a new poem of Johan Ludvig Runeberg's work Ensign Stahl . Since André helped him with the linguistic elaboration, he was also criticized for it after the Second World War. However, he was also a victim of the German occupation and had to flee to Telemark during his time as a student .

His father gave him the inspiration to deal with classical world literature . He also taught in the game of chess , which he also thematized in his book Spillet i mitt liv , published in 1968 .

In the course of his career, Bjerke also translated plays and poetry by Shakespeare , Molière , Goethe , Racine , Kipling , Parker , Poe , Hesse , Heine , Dickinson and Blixen . Among other things, he translated Goethe's Faust. A tragedy. and fist. The tragedy part two . When the translation of the second part was completed in 1983, he was already in a wheelchair. He also published several children's books.

He used the pseudonym Bernhard Borge for his crime novels. The detective novel De dødes tjern , published in 1942, was filmed in 1958 under the direction of Kåre Bergstrøm . Bjerke was involved as an actor.

Bjerke wrote in Riksmål and was committed to its language, u. a. as chairman of the Riksmålsforbundet for its official magazine Ordet, he was editor from 1950 to 1966 and as chairman of the Forfatterforeningen av 1952 .
