Riverton Prize
The Riverton Prize (Norwegian: Rivertonprisen ) is a nationally renowned Norwegian literary prize .
It has been awarded annually since 1972 for the best criminal literary work (novel, novella, drama, original manuscript for feature film, television film, radio play, etc.) by an association called Rivertonklubben in cooperation with booksellers and publishers' associations. In addition to the Rivertonprisen , the association awards two further awards at irregular intervals for special national and international services to criminal literary works.
Members of the association are writers, journalists, publishers, literary researchers and other persons who are professionally involved in criminal literary work. The society's president was the Norwegian crime writer Tom Egeland , who was awarded the prize in 2009.
Except in 1978, 1986 and 2004, only detective writers received the “trophy”: the Gyldne revolver , a gold-plated Belgian army revolver from the Nagant brand . With the international success of some crime writers in the last fifteen years - especially from Norway and Sweden - the local interest in Nordic crime literature is growing, and with it the willingness in Germany to translate and publish novels from the Scandinavian countries, such as those from the list the winner becomes apparent.
Namesake
The namesake for the Riverton Prize is the Norwegian Sven Elvestad (1884–1934), who among other things chose the pseudonym Stein Riverton as the author of detective novels . Sven Elvestad is considered to be the founder of the Norwegian crime novel.
