André Pirson

André Pirson (born March 26, 1910 in Erlangen , † February 7, 2004 in Göttingen ) was a German botanist , researcher and university professor . Until his retirement he researched and taught at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen .

biography

Pirson studied botany and graduated in 1937 with a doctorate . During his studies he was involved in the youth movement-reformed connections Nothung and Teja . In the 1950s he was a professor at the University of Marburg , where he was also responsible for the management of the botanical garden . From 1946 to 1958 he was director of the Botanical Institute in Marburg . He then switched to the Georg August University in Göttingen , where he stayed until his retirement. In 1954 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . Pirson was a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen from 1961 and its president from 1972–1976.

research

Pirson was mainly concerned with plant physiological studies of algae . One of his research subjects was the physiology and photosynthesis of the green algae Chlorella and Hydrodictyon and the role of manganese in photosynthesis.
