Life

Brandt studied structural engineering at the Bremen Building and Engineering School from 1958 to 1960 and architecture at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1961 to 1964 . In 1967 he became a member of the SAL planning group in Münster / Berlin. In 1968 he opened his own office in Berlin . From 1978 on he ran the Brandt und Böttcher office in partnership with Rudolf Böttcher in Berlin. Brandt held numerous teaching positions and visiting professorships at renowned universities and was Professor of Design and Building Science at the Technical University of Darmstadt from 1991 to 2002.

After his retirement he lived in Venice for several years , then almost exclusively in Berlin. He exercised specialist judging activities for architecture competitions and dealt with ethnological and ethnographic building studies for the Himalayan region, during which he recorded the impressions of his study trips and measurements.

Brandt's architecture is characterized by the effect of traditional materials and their use in design. Fair-faced masonry in particular determines many of his buildings. In 1992 an exhibition by Andreas Brandt & Rudolf Bottcher took place in the Galleria della Fondazione Angelo Masieri in Venice.
