Andreas Menger (born September 11, 1972 in Berlin ) is a former German soccer goalkeeper and today's goalkeeping coach .

Player career

Menger started playing football at Tennis Borussia Berlin . He came to SSV Reutlingen 05 as a B-youth because his father had found a new job in Tübingen . There he then went through the A-youth, before he moved to SSV Ulm 1846 in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg in 1991 .

With his new club he won the WFV Cup in 1992 , and the amateur team reached the third round in the 1992/93 DFB Cup . In the 1993/94 season he reached the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga with the team as leaders . Behind FSV Frankfurt , however, they missed the return to the second division, but the "Spatzen" qualified for the newly created regional league and again won the WFV Cup.

Nevertheless, Menger said goodbye to the Swabian region, and Edgar Burkart's club management convinced him to move to SpVgg Fürth . In the regional league he placed himself with the team in the front division. In 1996, TSV Vestenbergsgreuth joined , which gave coach Armin Veh the choice between goalkeepers Günther Reichold and Menger. With good performances he sat down between the posts and with 28 goals conceded was one of the guarantors for the promotion to second in the table behind the Franconian rival 1. FC Nürnberg .

Menger's good performances had aroused high-class interest, in the summer of 1997 1. FC Köln signed him . Almost a year after Bodo Illgner's move to Real Madrid, the club was still looking for a permanent solution in the goalkeeping position. Menger quickly prevailed as number one and remained a regular goalkeeper for the entire season, at the end of which, however, the club was relegated to the second division .

In the winter break of 98/99 Menger went to the first division club MSV Duisburg , where he was initially a substitute goalkeeper behind Gintaras Staučė and only played twice towards the end of the season. In the following season Menger and Staučė alternated in the Duisburg Gate, with Menger came to ten missions.

After the descent of the "Zebras" at the end of the 1999/2000 season, his involvement there ended. In the following winter break, he was signed by Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt .

Coaching career

In the immediate sequel, Menger took over the post of goalkeeping coach at Eintracht and stayed that way for seven years. For the 2011/2012 season Menger moved to VfB Stuttgart , where he was also the goalkeeping coach. On January 8, 2013, Andreas Menger extended his contract with VfB until the end of June 2016. On November 24, 2015, Alexander Zorniger's entire team of coaches was released from employment. In the 2016/17 season he was goalkeeping coach at the second division TSV 1860 Munich . Menger has been the goalkeeping coach of 1.FC Köln since January 1, 2018, after the previous goalkeeping coach Alexander Bade was dismissed.
