Andrej Kmeť

Andrej Kmeť (born November 19, 1841 in Bzenica , Slovakia; † February 16, 1908 in Turčiansky Svätý Martin , Slovakia) was a Slovak, k. k. and k. u. k Austrian pastor and botanist. Its botanical-mycological author's abbreviation is " Kmet ".

Life

Andres Kmeť, the son of a village blacksmith, attended elementary school in Žarnovica and then the school in Banská Štiavnica . In Gran he studied Catholic theology. First chaplain in Senohrad , Kmeť then pastor in Krnišov ( prince village) in Okres Krupina .

But he also dealt with other subjects, such as folklore or archeology. Even as a student he collected Christmas folk songs. For the world exhibition in Vienna in 1873 , for example, he organized an exhibition on embroidery from Hont County .

But Kmeť also wrote a book on economics . However, this was confiscated by the Hungarian authorities in 1875. Rosa Kmetiana is named after the rose grower .

During his research on the 1009  m-nm high Sitno mountain in the Schemnitz Mountains , Kmeť described 23 new species of plants and "sponges". The herbarium in the Slovak National Museum , which consists of 72,000 pieces, was founded by him. As chairman of the Slovak Museum Society, he made great contributions to the preservation of antiquities in Slovakia.

He also used his external contacts to promote international recognition for the Slovak people.

Appreciation

Numerous monuments have been erected in Slovakia in honor of Kmeť. But his achievements were also recognized differently. In Martin there is the Andrej Kmeť Museum as part of the Slovak National Museum. In 2008 a coin with a value of 200 SKK (€ 6.64) was launched.

Furthermore, in 1948 the community Ďorok in Okres Nové Zámky was renamed after Kmeťovo .
