Sir Andrew Noel Agnew, 9th Baronet DL JP (born August 14, 1850 at Exton Hall , Rutland , † July 14, 1928 ) was a Scottish politician.

Life

Agnew was born in 1850 as the fourth of 13 children and the eldest son of Andrew Agnew, 8th Baronet and his wife Mary Arabella Louisa Noel . He attended Harrow School and then studied law at Trinity College of Cambridge University . He earned a bachelor's degree in 1871 and was accepted into the Inner Temple in 1874 . In the same year he received his barrister license . On October 15, 1889, Agnew married Gertrude Vernon in London . When his father died on March 25, 1892, he inherited his title Baronet , of Lochnaw Castle in the County of Wigtown . The following year Agnew was installed as Vice Lord Lieutenant of Wigtownshire. He was also Deputy Lieutenant and JP for Wigtownshire. Agnew was a member of the Royal Company of Archers , the royal bodyguard in Scotland. He died in 1928. Since his marriage remained childless, his title of nobility fell to his nephew Fulque Agnew (1900–1975) as the 10th baronet on his death.

Political career

In the general election in 1900 , Agnew first ran for elections at the national level. He applied for the mandate of the constituency of Edinburgh South for the Liberal Unionists and stood against the Liberal Arthur Dewar , who had represented the constituency in the British House of Commons since the by-elections last year . On election day, Agnew prevailed with a difference of only 111 votes against Dewar and moved into the House of Commons for the first time.

In the following general election in 1906 , Agnew did not apply for any further term and resigned from parliament. The seat of parliament went to Arthur Dewar a second time.
