His behavioral research and experiments with non-human primates and humans (especially children) focuses on social cognition , with topics such as social learning , Machiavellian intelligence , tradition and the development of culture . In 1996, together with colleagues, he invented an artificial fruit with which the learning behavior of monkeys and humans could be studied.

Live and act

Whiten first studied zoology at the University of Sheffield and then earned a PhD in psychology from the University of Bristol . He taught at the University of St Andrews from 1970 , worked in the Department of Psychology there from 1975 and as Professor of Evolutionary and Developmental Psychology from 1997. From 2003 he founded and directed the Interdisciplinary Center for Social Learning and Cultural Evolution in St Andrews.

He also founded and ran the Living Links to Human Evolution (short: Living Links ) primate research center , which opened at Edinburgh Zoo in 2008 and has over 250,000 visitors annually.

Memberships and functions in scientific societies

Whiten is a member of the following learned societies :

From 2008 to 2013 he was a member of the Editorial Board of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society , Biological Sciences . From 2011 to 2013 he also chaired the British Academy's Research Awards Committee.

Awards

In 2001 Whiten received the Delwart International Scientific Prize from the Belgian Royal Academies for Science and the Arts , in 2007 the Rivers Memorial Medal from the Royal Anthropological Institute (RAI) and the Osman Hill Medal from the Primate Society of Great Britain . He is also the first and so far only scientist to receive both the Sir James Black Medal (2014) and the Senior Prize and Medal for Public Engagement (2015) from the Royal Society of Edinburgh .
