Andy Kassier (2018)

Andy Kassier (* 1989 in Berlin ) is a concept artist and photographer who lives and works in Berlin.

life and work

From 2012 to 2018 he studied with Mischa Kuball and Johannes Wohnseifer at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne . In his artistic practice, which is made up of photography , sculpture , installation , video and performance , he sarcastically and ironically brightly illuminates concepts of success , wealth and self-expression on the Internet and especially on the social media pages . He learned the marketing tricks and strategies as an assistant and photographer in the advertising industry . He became known for his ongoing performance success is just a smile away , which he has been running on Instagram since 2013 .

Kassier and the New York artist Signe Pierce could be seen live with the performance "on the internet, nobody knows you're a performance artist" in 2018 at the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf . What both have in common is that they deliberately blur the line between art and life when they highlight and question female and male stereotypes and role clichés by exaggerating and questioning them on social media . He could be heard alongside Rafael Horzon , Anika Meier, Kristina Musholt and Kathrin Weßling on the subject of “Digital Identity” at re: publica 2018.

Quotes

"Success is just a smile away."

- Andy Kassier as a fictional character : monopol-magazin.de

"In the past you could count the people who take self-portraits, today you can count the people who don't take selfies."

- Andy Kassier as an artist : monopol-magazin.de

"The resulting images are funny, but beyond the visual gags they comprise a deeper critique of the capitalist system which perpetuates this view of masculinity, and the way these roles play out through selfies online."

"The photos he takes are funny, but behind the apparent gags there is a deep criticism of the capitalist system, which maintains the male understanding of the role expressed in the pictures, as it is also spread via selfies posted online."
