Andrew L. "Andy" Middleton (born May 22, 1962 in Harrisburg (Pennsylvania) ) is an American jazz musician ( tenor and soprano saxophone , composition , arrangement ). Since 2006 he has lived in Vienna, where he teaches as a professor at the Music and Art University of the City of Vienna .

Live and act

Middleton graduated from the University of Rochester , NY, and the University of Miami . He lived in New York for twenty years, where he worked with Lionel Hampton , the big band of Bob Mintzer , Randy Brecker and Maria Schneider , but also directed his own band. He was also a co-leader of the Canadian-American quartet The Windows , which combined tradition and modernity with a lot of irony. According to Tom Lord, he was involved in 32 recordings in the field between 1983 and 2013 and can also be heard on albums by Randy Bernsen or The New Yorkestra. As a composer and arranger, he wrote numerous works for various jazz ensembles from quartet to big band and numerous arrangements for standards in vocal jazz. Saxophone quartets and other chamber music works.

Prizes and awards

Middleton was awarded first prize for the best soloist and for the best arrangement at the 1991 European Jazz Competition in Belgium. In 2004 he received a composition scholarship from Chamber Music America's New Works Creation and Presentation Program .
