Alan Jones (drummer)

Alan Jones (* 4. August 1962 in Longview , Washington ) is an American drummer of modern jazz who temporarily lived in Europe.

Live and act

Jones spent his childhood in Portland, Oregon , where he learned guitar and drums when he was six. He took up jazz at an early age, received lessons from local musicians, and at the age of 16 went on tour with organist Count Dutch and Jim Pepper . From 1980 he studied at Berklee College of Music with Alan Dawson and participated twice in the summer school of the Banff Center for the Fine Arts ; he also had lessons from Art Blakey . He became a member of the New York jazz scene, working with Andrew Hill , John Abercrombie , John Clayton , Cecil Taylor , Randy Brecker , Dave Liebman , George Cables and Lee Konitz . He has repeatedly toured with Phil Dwyer and David Friesen . Since 1988 he lived in Europe, initially in Vienna and Paris. With Andy Middleton , Paul Imm and François Théberge founded The Fensters and played with Kenny Wheeler , Miroslav Vitouš as well as David Friesen and Uwe Kropinski . Back in Portland in 1996 he founded his own formation, which released several albums for which he also composed. Between 2005 and 2007 he lived in Germany, where he also played with the groups of Olaf Polziehn , Jochen Feucht and Peter Bolte . Since 2008 he lived in Portland again, where he founded his own jazz club . He also performed with Esperanza Spalding and toured with Phil Dwyer, Seamus Blake , Ingrid Jensen , Jon Ballantyne and Tom Wakeling. He can also be heard on albums by David Friesen, Wayne Darling , Gordon Lee , Andy Middleton, Peter Bolte, Olaf Polziehn and Remy Filipovitch .

He also taught at Portland State University and founded the Alan Jones Academy of Music .
