Angelika Machinek (born November 17, 1956 in Eschershausen ; † October 12, 2006 near Echzell ) was a German glider pilot .

Life

Angelika Machinek studied sociology and German in Göttingen . In 1981 she passed her first state examination for teaching at grammar schools, and in 1985 she received her doctorate in Modern German Literature in Frankfurt am Main . She then worked as a dramaturge at the theater and as a publishing editor. Most recently she worked as a freelance real estate agent in Frankfurt am Main.

Even as a 14-year-old she began gliding, initially close to her parents' house on the gliding site on the Ith , and laid 1973, the pilot's license examination , and was a youth leader at the Aviation Club Eschershausen. The aerobatics license followed in 1979 and the flight instructor examination in 1980. She was a flight instructor for gliding, powered flight , microlight flight and balloon flight . However, her particular passion was gliding. Her main concern was the establishment of the German championship for women. She was the spokeswoman for the national gliding team and was five times German champion, in addition she won several medals at world and European championships as well as several world records. On December 6, 2002, she achieved a speed record in competition class D15 with the Schempp-Hirth Ventus 2cM glider at Bitterwasser airfield in Namibia, a speed of 153.8 km / h over a triangular course of 300 km, see German glider records .

The FAI, as the highest international air sports organization, honored them with one of the highest awards in air sports, the Pelagia Majewska Gliding Medal for world best performance in women's gliding . In other functions, she was an expert and examination board member in Hesse, a consultant for performance flight at the German Gliding Commission, chairwoman of the specialist committee for top-class sport and a representative of German interests at the International Gliding Commission. Their club was the Aero Club Bad Nauheim.

On October 12, 2006, at the age of 49, she was killed in a crash with an microlight near Echzell on the A 45 .

In memory of Angelika Machinek, the “Dr. Angelika Machinek - Women's Gliding Association ”founded. At the beginning of 2016, the city of Frankfurt am Main decided to name a street in the Rebstock -Nord-Ost development area in Bockenheim after it. On the former site of Frankfurt Airport, the street names especially commemorate aviation pioneers.
