Development and works

After completing her studies, Angenelle Thijssen devoted herself to painting the concrete representation of people. Then she followed the non-figurative trend and tried to convey her message with the same strength. This led to strong and colorful images that can be counted as part of the lyrical-abstract art movement. Commissions for a number of woodcuts again led her to include figurative, but now landscape elements, be it in stylized or abstract forms. Her works show closely adjoining shades of color: The color is applied in a strong and flexible brushwork, either dry and loose or thick and pasty. Bright colors and sparkling light create an atmospheric and sensitive atmosphere. This balancing in the border area between the figurative and the abstraction gives her latest works an almost expressionistic character. She gets her inspiration from her everyday environment as well as during her stays in the Mediterranean countries. Angenelle Thijssen's woodcuts are evidence of precision and craftsmanship. The lively colorful pictures, like their cloths, radiate an intense world of experience. The woodcuts are built using wooden stamps: each color requires a separate stamp. The semi-transparent layers printed on top of each other result in a characteristic shade of color. Angenelle Thijssen uses the grain of the wood in a very personal way . She has also designed designs for a Belgian fashion house.
