The Anhalter is an old cultivar of the cultivated apple , which probably originally comes from the Hessian Taunus ( Hessen-Nassau ). It was probably raised from seeds by Johann Ludwig Christ in Kronberg , which is why it was formerly referred to as Christ's Wildling . The hitchhiker was often called a follower .

The hitchhiker was especially widespread in Hesse and Nassau, where it was valued as a cider apple . In these areas, the variety can still be found sporadically on old trees in the orchard , but is considered endangered because it is seldom replanted. The tree is robust and vigorous, which makes it very large and particularly durable. The hitchhiker is used as a business and cider apple.

In the past, the names Anhalter and trailer were often used for various apple varieties that were particularly wind-resistant and therefore hung on the tree for a long time. The name Anhalter was also used as a synonym for the Rhenish bean apple . The varieties Anhalter and Rheinischer Bohnapfel are not identical.

The variety was named Hessian Local Variety of the Year in 2015 by the Hessen State Group of the Pomologen-Verein e. V. named. The aim is to draw attention to old fruit varieties that are worth preserving in Hessen. Corresponding campaigns and public relations work are carried out every year, such as maintenance measures on old trees, rice extraction and delivery to tree nurseries, planting campaigns as well as lectures and exhibitions.
