Ann Vriend (born in Vancouver ) is a Canadian singer-songwriter and pianist from Edmonton , Alberta .

Life

Youth, training and debut album 2003

Her parents recognized and encouraged her musical talent early on. At the age of three she took her first violin and at nine she began taking piano lessons. During school she began to write and compose her first songs and played in several bands. She later studied classical music for a few semesters at the University of Alberta and King's University College in Edmonton , before completing a two-year music education at MacEwan University from 1998.

After successfully completing her studies, Ann Vriend released a demo in 2000 that was soon played on radio stations along the entire west coast of Canada. This earned her an appearance at the 2001 Edmonton Folk Music Festival . Later she was able to win a songwriting competition. As a result, she moved to Nashville , where she earned the money for her debut album Soul Unraveling , which was released in 2003.

Further studio and live albums 2005–2010

Two years later, their 2nd album Modes of Transport was released. The title Feeling 'Fine from this album was put into heavy rotation by a local adult contemporary station . The 3rd album When We Were Spies was released on March 11, 2008. It was produced by Douglas Romanov, who was nominated for a Juno . The album is characterized by modern pop sounds. The St. Paul title made it into the "Heavy Rotation" in her hometown of Edmonton. He was also represented in the top 30 at radio stations in Toronto and Cologne . In mid-2008 Ann Vriend released the first music video for (If We Are Not) Spies .

Ann Vriend has toured Canada, Australia and Europe, performing both as a solo artist and with a band. Live recordings from the shows in 2008 and 2009 were released as Closer Encounters at the end of 2009 , along with new songs that were created live-off-the-floor . Videos were made of the two new songs on this album ( A Dollar and a Suitcase and On Your Street ) and were released in 2010.

In August 2010 Ann Vriend had an appearance on the well-known Australian show Spicks and Specks . It has also already been featured in a regional news program in the Netherlands . She has also appeared on network TV stations in Canada and Australia.

Ann Vriend is also the curator and host of Edmonton's Bluebird North Performance Series.

Ten years in the music business 2011–2014

With Love & Other Messes , another studio album by Ann Vriend was released in early 2011 after almost three years. A band consisting of seven members is featured on the album. Among them were the singers Coco Love Alcorn and Chloe Albert . There is also a duet with Matt Epp on the album . The recording, which was produced by Ann Vriend herself, is influenced by country music , muscle shoals , classic R&B and Motown sounds . Ann Vriend published a video for Graffity on my Heart . The album was in the album charts of the radio station CKUA at number 1 for two weeks. The Toronto Star newspaper gave the album 3.5 out of 4 stars in a review.

On the occasion of the engagement of Prince William and Catherine Middleton , Ann Vriend sang in early 2011 to the single William and Kate produced by Canadian musicians , which was first seen on YouTube in January . In July 2013 she won the national “She's the One” Emerging Female Artist Competition at the RBC Bluesfest Festival in Ottawa .

In March 2014 her 5th studio album For The People In The Mean Time was released . After a few appearances in Canada, she then went on tour in the Netherlands and Germany until the beginning of May.

Music genre

Ann Vriend's style of music clearly shows the influences of Paul Simon , Leonard Cohen and Cat Stevens . Her distinct voice has been compared to the clear and vulnerable voice of Dolly Parton , the playful voice of Cyndi Lauper, and the powerful voices of Aretha Franklin and Etta James .
