Anna Elisabeth Haselbach

Anna Elisabeth Haselbach (born December 6, 1942 in Berlin , Germany ) is an Austrian politician .

Life

Haselbach came to Austria with her parents as a toddler and grew up in Vienna . Here she also attended elementary school , as well as a general education secondary school and graduated from the Matura in 1961 . She joined the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) at an early age and worked in her party's federal women's secretariat from 1976 to 1977. In 1977 she got a job as a civil servant in the Federal Ministry for Science and Research and worked in the office of the ministers Hertha Firnberg and Heinz Fischer . When Hans Tuppy, an ÖVP politician, became Minister of Science in 1987 , she had to vacate her chair and then found work in the ministry's research department. In 1999 she was promoted to office director.

Haselbach became District Councilor for the Vienna district of Brigittenau in 1987 , before she was briefly sent to the Vienna State Parliament and City Council from May to December 1987 . On December 9, 1987, Haselbach became a member of the Federal Council , an office that she would hold until December 31, 2007 for twenty years. During that period she was President of the Federal Council four times , most recently from July to December 2004.

Haselbach was also active on an international level. In 1994 she sat on the body that was supposed to regulate Austria's admission to the European Union . In addition to other important positions, she also held the office of chairman of the Austrian-Israeli Friendship Group and, thanks to good bilateral relations with the People's Republic of China, provided economic impetus for Austria.
