Anno 1701 (in North America Anno 1701: Dawn of Discovery ) is a console offshoot of the Anno series , which is based on the title of the same name . It is the first title from the series in question that was released for the Nintendo DS mobile console. The game was developed by the Frankfurt studio Keen Games and published by Disney Interactive in summer 2007.

The game mechanics are similar to the Windows title Anno 1701 , but it has been made simpler in some places. The game offers a separate campaign for this.

Gameplay

Like the Windows version, the Nintendo DS version of Anno 1701 deals with the discovery and development of territories in the New World . The player takes on the role of a seafarer who, on behalf of his queen, settles previously unknown areas. The aim of the game is to build a functioning city and its constant supply of consumer goods.

Here, too, the focus is on building a cycle of goods. In order for settlers to settle in the player's city, the player sets up production chains for goods such as food or clothing. If the player supplies all the needs of his population, they will rise to a more affluent class. The game features five social classes ranging from pioneers to aristocrats. With each level up, the population makes new demands on the player for goods. The development of the settlement is financed by taxing the citizens.

Instead of the three-dimensional graphics of the Windows version, the DS version uses an isometric graphic. In terms of play, the combat system in particular has been simplified, which is largely automatic.

The game includes three modes, the endless game, a multiplayer mode for up to four players and a campaign that includes 15 missions.

The website Metacritic , which collects and evaluates test reports, calculated an average rating of 78 out of 100 points. It scored one point less than the Windows version.

The author Matthias Oertel from 4Players described the game as successful. It is convincing how Keen Games adapted the game to the platform. It doesn't seem like a simple port, but as a title carefully tailored to the Nintendo console. This was also praised by Simon Parkin from Eurogamer . In some cases, control with the stylus is even more convenient than with the mouse.

The game won the GIGA-Maus as the best console game for children aged ten and over.

Neither developers nor publishers gave any information about the sales figures. According to estimates, this has been sold around 120,000 times so far.
