Since the Indonesian invasion of East Timor in 1975, Silva fought against the occupiers as the commander of a unit ( Portuguese Unidade ) of the FALINTIL. His pregnant wife was killed in the Indonesian massacre on Mount Aitana . She was shot in the stomach, which also hit the unborn child.

On August 8, 1983, Silva was involved in the attack on an Indonesian military unit in Kraras , in which 14 Indonesian soldiers (16 according to other sources) died. Due to a local festival, the Indonesians had their weapons out of hand when they were attacked. The two guards were defeated within ten minutes. The East Timorese are said to have cut off the victims' penises. The Indonesians responded to the attack with the Kraras massacre . On June 20, 1991, Silva was captured by the Indonesians. In the trial of FALINTIL boss Xanana Gusmão , Silva appeared as a witness and stated that between 1975 and 1991 he had participated in 17 attacks by FALINTIL on Indonesian soldiers and villages. But he never received a direct order from Gusmão. During his time at FALINTIL, he felt like a Portuguese citizen, but is now Indonesian. At that time, Silva was not in custody. When the Indonesians withdrew in 1999, Silva was officially demobilized and joined the new East Timorese Defense Forces (F-FDTL). In 2003 he held the rank of captain and was charged with the exhumation of FALINTIL dead in the mountains of East Timor.

On May 24, 2017, Silva was named military chief of staff to President Francisco Lú-Olo Guterres . Simultaneously with the appointment, the promotion from lieutenant colonel to colonel took place.
