Antônio Sarto

Antônio Sarto SDB (born February 27, 1926 in Lins , São Paulo , Brazil ; †  September 29, 2008 in Campinas , São Paulo) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Barra do Garças .

Life

Antônio Sarto joined the order of the Salesians of Don Bosco , made his profession on March 2, 1941 and studied philosophy in Lorena from 1942 to 1944 and theology in São Paulo from 1948 to 1951. He was ordained a priest on June 1, 1951 at the headquarters of the Order in Turin . Until 1971 he was director of studies of various colleges in São Paulo, in 1971 he was appointed provincial economist of the province of São Paulo.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on May 24, 1971 titular bishop of Arae in Mauretania and appointed him coadjutor of the prelature Porto Velho . He received his episcopal consecration on August 15, 1971, the Apostolic Nuncio in Brazil and later Cardinal, Umberto Mozzoni ; Co -consecrators were Bishop João Batista Costa SDB, Prelate of Porto Velho, and Bishop Miguel d'Aversa SDB, Prelate of Humaitá in the Amazon region. His motto was "Ex hominibus, pro hominibus" ("By the people, for the people").

Pope John Paul II appointed him coadjutor bishop with the elevation of the prelature Porto Velho to the diocese in 1979 . On March 25, 1982 he was appointed the first bishop of the newly established diocese of Barra do Garças . Pope John Paul II granted his age-related resignation on May 23, 2001.

In 2007 he published the revision of the translation of the lexicon "Lexicon - Termos ambíguos e discutidos sobre família, vida e questões éticas" on the family, life and ethical issues into Portuguese, edited by the Pontifical Council for the Family .

He died of complications from cancer. Bishop Sarto was buried in Campinas .
