Anthony Bushell (Germanist)

Anthony Bushell (* 1951 ) is a German studies scholar from the United Kingdom who is a professor at Bangor University in Wales.

Bushell received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Ulster and his Master of Arts from the University of Warwick . He published his first essay on Marie Luise Kaschnitz in 1981 . In 1989 Bushell received his doctorate from the University of Birmingham with a thesis on the emergence of poetry in West Germany in the early post-war period (title: The Emergence of West German Poetry from the Second World War into the Early Post-War Period: A Study in Poetic Response ). He then received the Postgraduate Certificate in Education in Oxfordshire, which qualifies for the teaching profession . He has been Professor of Modern Languages, and in particular German, at the University of Wales , Bangor , since 1995 . From 1998 to 2005 he was head of the School of Modern Languages there.

Anthony Bushell has published mainly on German-language literature from the post-war period , focusing on short forms such as poetry and Austrian literature and culture . He has written about Hans Lebert , Peter Henisch and Anna Mitgutsch , among others , and has also written handbooks and lexicon entries on the subject. In 2013 he published his monograph Polemical Austria , in which he examines the rhetoric of Austrian national identity from the Austrian Empire to the Second Republic based on the Waldheim affair and on the basis of a wide range of sources.

Bushell was a visiting scholar at St John's College at the University of Oxford . He heads a British-Slovak research group on contemporary Austrian literature and is the general editor of the book series Austrian Studies in Context . He spent four years as editor of the English edition of the journal Foreign Policy ( "German Foreign Affairs Review"), which appeared in 1998. In 2010, he joined the UK debate on the decline in foreign language learning by addressing the dangers of British "linguistic isolationism" in a controversial essay.
