Anthony Ekezia Ilonu

Anthony Ekezia Ilonu (born November 13, 1937 in Nightcaps ; † June 17, 2012 ) was Bishop of Okigwe .

Life

Anthony Ekezia Ilonu was ordained a priest for the diocese of Umuahia on December 19, 1964 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Okigwe on January 24, 1981. The Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Nigeria , Carlo Curis , consecrated him bishop on March 29 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Francis Arinze , Archbishop of Onitsha , and Anthony Gogo Nwedo CSSp , Bishop of Umuahia .

On April 22, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. his health-related resignation and appointed the coadjutor bishop of the same diocese, Solomon Amanchukwu Amatu , as his successor.

He campaigned against the introduction of Sharia law , the Islamic legal system, across the whole of northern Nigeria. He was committed to the Catholic Youths of Nigeria on behalf of the Catholic Bishops conference of Nigeria (CBCN) .
