Antoine Parmentier
Antoine Augustin Parmentier (born August 17, 1737 in Montdidier , † December 17, 1813 in Paris ) was a French pharmacist and agronomist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Parm. "
Life
Parmentier learned pharmacy in Montdidier and Paris and worked in the hospitals of the army operating in Hanover from 1757 and at the royal house of invalids from 1766.
When the Académie française in Paris offered a prize for the best treatise on vegetables that could replace bread during the famine in 1769 , Parmentier earned this prize for his work on potato cultivation , which he subsequently played a key role in spreading in France contributed. It is said that he had soldiers guard a potato field in order to present the tubers as particularly valuable. During the night he had the guards removed and the farmers in the area fetched the plant in order to grow it themselves (a story that is mainly attributed to the Prussian King Friedrich II or Friedrich the Great, see potato order ).
In other respects, too, he made various contributions to agriculture and industry. During the continental blockade , he was engaged in the production of grape and beet sugar on Napoleon's I order . The army hospitals received many useful facilities through him. Under the consular government, he became General Inspector of Medical Services.
On December 13, 1795 he was accepted into the Académie des Sciences .
Antoine Parmentier died on December 17, 1813 at the age of 76 and was buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery . His hometown erected a statue for him.
Honor taxon
The genus Parmentiera DC was named in his honor . the plant family of the trumpet tree plants (Bignoniaceae).
Because of his contribution to potato cultivation, a popular French variant of a mashed potato casserole is called Hachis Parmentier .
