Anton Xaver Schurz (born September 2, 1794 in Asparn an der Zaya , † December 29, 1859 in Vienna ) was an Austrian writer .

Life

Anton Schurz was a son of Johann Paul Schurz, who worked as administrator of the Breuner rule. His wife Therese Schurz, with whom he had been married since 1821, was a sister of the poet Nikolaus Lenau . His daughter Katharina Schurz worked as a stage singer.

Anton Schurz attended the St. Anna School in Vienna and studied at the Bergakademie Schemnitz from 1810 . From 1813 he worked in court accounting for the coinage and mining industry, first in Oravica and from 1814 in Vienna. There he became an accountant in 1835 and court accountant in 1850. He retired as a civil servant in 1854.

As a writer, Schurz stood in the tradition of the time before the Weimar Classic . His poems appeared, among other things, scattered in various almanacs . He was influenced by the work of his brother-in-law Nikolaus Lenau, with whom he was close friends until his death and with whom he made several trips. He wrote a two-volume biography of Lenau, which is an important source for Lenau research.

Anton Schurz died in 1859 at the age of 65 and was buried in a grave next to that of Nikolaus Lenau in the Weidlinger Friedhof . The Schurzgasse in Vienna- Hetzendorf was named after him in 1922 .
