Anton Zampis

Anton Thomas Josef Zampis (born February 27, 1820 in Vienna ; † December 20, 1883 there ) was an Austrian cartoonist .

Life

Anton Zampis was the son of an Udine- born silk merchant of the same name . From 1841 he worked full-time as an official in the General Court Chamber . As an artist he was self-taught .

He published humorous and satirical scenes from everyday life in Vienna, for example with laundry girls, fiacers and lantern lighters. Horses were also among his favorite subjects. Zampis became known for his political caricatures during the revolution of 1848/1849 in the Austrian Empire . On his pages he caricatured the then Interior Minister Franz von Pillersdorf as well as numerous celebrities in Viennese society. Under the self-chosen name Kuno von Frauenstein he was a member of the sociable Viennese artists' association Green Island .

Anton Zampis married Pauline Eder from Korneuburg in 1854 . He was retired as a civil servant in 1857 due to illness. The reared by the couple's adopted son Nicholas Zampis made in 1872 as a conman headlines, located in the city of Pest as a " Count Esterhazy spent". In 1873, the year of the Vienna World Exhibition , Anton Zampis tried his hand at running a billing bureau for foreigners which, through multilingual agents at Vienna's train stations, brokered available apartments for arriving travelers. In the last years of his life he had financial problems. He died impoverished at the age of 63.

Zampis' grave at the Vienna Central Cemetery was dedicated in honor by the City of Vienna in 1926 . Zampisgasse in Vienna- Inzersdorf was named after him in 1958.
