Antoni Griera i Gaja

Antoni Griera i Gaja (born January 17, 1887 in Sant Bartomeu del Grau, province of Barcelona , † December 3, 1974 in Castellar del Vallès ) was a Spanish Romanist and Catalanist .

life and work

Monseñor Griera studied in Paris (with Jules Gilliéron ), Halle a. S. and Zurich. He received his doctorate in 1914 from the University of Zurich with the thesis La frontera catalano-aragonesa. Estudi geografico-lingüístic (Barcelona 1914), was ordained a priest in the same year and taught Catalan philology at the University of Barcelona (later as a professor). From 1921 to 1932 he was a member of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans .

From 1939 he was pastor in Sant Cugat del Vallès , made a contribution to the restoration of the important Sant Cugat monastery and settled the Institut Internacional de Cultura Romànica there, with whose help he published his works.

Griera published an eight-volume linguistic atlas and a fourteen -volume dictionary of Catalan using innovative methods .

Griera was an honorary doctorate from the University of Leuven .
