Antonio Maria Frosini (born September 8, 1751 in Modena , † July 8, 1834 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Frosini came from a noble family, his parents were the Marchese Alessandro Frosini and his wife Countess Vittoria Carandini, through his mother he was related to the cardinals Filippo Carandini and Ercole Consalvi . He studied until 1771 at the Collegio dei Nobili di San Carlo in Modena, then at the La Sapienza University in Rome law and decided legal education with his relative Filippo Carandini. In Rome he also studied philosophy and theology .

After the death of his father, Antonio Maria Frosini began a court career as chamberlain to the Duke of Modena Francesco III. d'Este . In 1773 he was the Duke's agent at the imperial court in Vienna . After his return from Vienna, Frosini moved to Rome and entered papal services. He received the tonsure on February 18, 1783 and became a trainee lawyer at the Court of Justice of the Apostolic Signature . After positions as governor of various areas of the Papal States , he had to flee to Florence during the short-lived Roman Republic in 1798 , as well as during the French occupation of the Papal States in 1808. In 1810 he had to go into exile in Paris, after the fall of Napoleon he toured all of France and England. After his return to Rome he resumed his position at the Apostolic Signature and was appointed Pro-Dean on August 28, 1814. From 1817 to 1823 he held the post of Prefect of the Apostolic Palace and Governor of Castel Gandolfo .

Pope Pius VII created Frosini cardinal in the consistory of March 10, 1823, and on the same day appointed him cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry Santa Maria in Cosmedin . Among other things, he was Prefect of the Congregation for Indulgences and Relics from 1829 to 1832 .

As a cardinal, Antonio Maria Frosini took part in the conclave of 1823 , which Pope Leo XII. chose; also at the conclave of 1829 , which Pius VIII chose, and at the conclave of 1830/1831 , from which Gregory XVI. emerged as Pope.

Antonio Maria Frosini died on July 8, 1834 and was buried in Rome in the Capuchin Church of San Bonaventura alla Polveriera .
