Aquarius is an Italian slasher film from 1987 and the first film by Italian director Michele Soavi . It was produced by Joe D'Amato .
action
Rehearsals for a musical take place in a theater under the very demanding director Peter Collins. The premiere is coming soon, but a lot of things are still not working. When Alicia sprains her ankle, she and Betty go to a hospital. This is where the mass murderer Irving Wallace is located. He succeeds in killing his carer and then getting to the theater in the car of the two dancers. His first victim there is Betty.
After the police have recorded the murder, Peter has the key of the theater hidden: he sees perfect publicity for his play; he makes the appropriate changes. During further rehearsals, the gay Brett, whose role Wallace takes, dies. In this way, unnoticed, he can turn a fake murder into a real act. Now those who remained in the theater want to flee - but the key has disappeared and opportunities to contact the outside world have been cut off.
Other victims include the play's producer, Ferrari, and Mark, who suffers a terrible death from a drill. Peter pursues the murderer and confronts him - but again he was able to fool the theater people. The lovers Sybil and Danny also die. The only remaining Peter, Alicia and Laurel try to escape in the rooms of the theater. But Wallace can kill Peter as the next victim. When only Alicia is left a little later, she finds the arranged corpses and Wallace in an owl mask in a bizarre scene on the stage. With great effort she can get the key to the theater. This is what makes Wallace aware of her. It can push the killer down and set it on fire.
When Alicia returns to the theater the next day, she discovers that there is not enough corpse there. Wallace, who suddenly appears behind her, is shot by caretaker Willy.

Frames
Uncut version
The uncut version of Aquarius - Theater des Todes has a running time of 90 minutes. All world-wide releases of the film on DVD contain this version, including the German DVD. However, the uncut version was indexed in Germany and had the SPIO / JK approval without any criminal law concerns . The indexing was lifted in June 2013, and the FSK has not yet been re-examined.
British VHS version
The label Avatar released Aquarius - Theater of Death for the first time in the UK . This frame is slightly cut. All later VHS and DVD releases contained the uncut version.
German VHS version
The version that was included on the German video of the VPS label is the most heavily edited version of the film in the world. Although all scenes of violence were removed from the film, this version still got FSK approval for 18 years.

- Aquarius - Theater des Todes was Michele Soavi's first feature film as a director. He previously worked as an assistant director with Joe D'Amato , Dario Argento and Lamberto Bava .
- Director Soavi can be seen in a supporting role as a young police officer in a patrol car.
- Sheila Goldberg, who was responsible for the English dubbed version, plays the woman at the reception in the psychiatric clinic who tries to get rid of Alicia and Betty.
