description

Habit, leaves, flowers and fruits

Appearance and leaf

Ardisia solanacea grows as a shrub up to 3 meters high or occasionally as a 4.5 to 6 meter high tree . The above-ground parts of the plant are bare. The bark of the clearly angular branches is reddish in color.

The alternate to pseudo whorlly arranged leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The runny leaf stalk is 1 to 2 inches long. With a length of 12 to 20 centimeters and a width of 4 to 7 centimeters, the parchment-like, simple leaf blades are obverse-lanceolate, obovate or oblong-elliptical with a wedge-shaped or tapering blade base and usually a pointed, sometimes short-pointed or blunt upper end. The smooth leaf edge is slightly curled down. On each side of the central vein there are about 20 side veins that are raised on both sides of the leaf; there is no leaf vein running along the edge . Line veining is indistinct. The upper side of the sheet is not clearly dotted with black, on the underside it is elongated and dotted with translucent dots after drying.

Inflorescence, flower and fruit

In China, the flowering period extends from February to March. At the base of the young twigs are the 3 to 8 cm long, paniculate total inflorescences , which consist of racemose or rarely umbrella-shaped partial inflorescences. The flower stalk is 1 to 3 inches long.

The hermaphroditic, leathery flowers are radial symmetry and usually five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five free, dense black glandular dotted sepals are ovoid to kidney-shaped with a length of 2 to 4 millimeters with a weakly eyelet base, smooth to notched, ciliate edge and rounded upper end. The five light mauve to pink petals are only fused at their base. The five scattered glandular dotted, full-margined corolla lobes are usually broadly ovate with a length of about 9 millimeters with a blunt or pointed upper end and smooth, translucent edge, rarely ovoid-elliptical or elongated-elliptical and asymmetrical. Only the inner circle with five stamens is present; they are almost as long as the petals. The stamens that have grown together with the petals are only a quarter of the length of the anthers. They linear-lanceolate anthers are dense glandular dotted at their base, end pointed and open with a longitudinal slit. The pistil is almost as long as the petals. The above constant, spherical ovary is punctured close glandular and contains a plurality of rows in many ovules .

The densely dotted, initially pink, purple-red to almost black when ripe, single-seeded drupes are flattened with a length of about 8 millimeters and a diameter of mostly 7 to 9, rarely up to 11 millimeters. The juice of the fruit is purple and the "pulp" is white. In China, the fruits ripen between August and November.

Chromosome set

The basic chromosome number is x = 23; there is diploidy , i.e. 2n = 46.

distribution

The natural distribution area of Ardisia solanacea ranges from Sri Lanka , through India and Nepal to Singapore and the Chinese provinces of southwestern Guangxi , southern and southeastern Yunnan . It is cultivated many in tropical countries (e.g. Hawaii). Ardisia solanacea is a neophyte in some tropical countries .
