Arena SpA , based in Tolentino (Italy), is a sporting goods manufacturer of swimwear and swimming accessories.

History and organization

The company was founded in 1973 by Horst Dassler , the son of Adidas founder Adolf Dassler and managing director of adidas France.

Arena works with scientists and researchers to develop high-performance materials for swimming suits and equipment.

Arena has worked with international swimming champions from the start, including Mark Spitz , Shane Gould , Matt Biondi , Alexander Popow , Franziska van Almsick , Aaron Peirsol , Filippo Magnini , Laure Manaudou , László Cseh , Paul Biedermann , Alain Bernard , Kirsty Coventry , Rebecca Soni and César Cielo , Bronte Campbell , Cate Campbell , Emily Seebohm , Mitch Larkin , Tania Cagnotto Jeanne Collonge , Christian Kramer , Kristin Möller , Philip Heintz u. a.

Arena built an elite team that won 44 medals at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. Two years later at the 1978 World Swimming Championships in Berlin, the arena elite team won 62 medals.

With branches in France, Germany and the USA as well as a broad network of sales partners and licensees, Arena has a global presence and its brand is represented in over 100 countries. In Japan and 10 other Asian countries, the brand is operated by the Japanese Descente Group, which acquired the rights in 1990.

From 2010 the company belonged to the US private equity company Riverside. At the end of 2013, the Swiss fund Capvis announced the purchase of Arena.
