The company Arenaways SpA was a private Italian railway company based in Alessandria .

history

The founder, co-owner and namesake of Arenaways is Giuseppe Arena, who worked for Trenitalia for a long time and founded the freight transport railway company Strade Ferrate del Mediterraneo (SFM) in 2001 , which was taken over by Deutsche Bahn in 2004 and is now known as DB Schenker Rail Italia Srl (also based in Alessandria) operates. The company was established in 2009. One of the company's goals was to expand regional traffic between the agglomerations of the Piedmont and Lombardy regions . This could be set up in the form of a ring traffic on the connection Milan-Turin-Alessandria for about a year. However, the infrastructure company of the Italian state railway, RFI, did not allow Arenaways to serve stops on the way between Milan and Turin. Because of this prevention strategy, the Italian antitrust authorities fined Trenitalia and RFI on July 25, 2012 .

Since August 1, 2011, the company has been managed by a bankruptcy administrator after shareholders filed for bankruptcy. According to reports from September 2011, Arenaways will be sold. One reason for the financial problems is said to be the insufficient utilization of the main line between Turin and Milan, as the regions did not allow stops on the way (see also regional traffic Turin-Milan ). According to reports, the regional regular service has not resumed after the summer break in August, while the international motorail trains are running again. According to another report, the company was sold to a new owner.

Car and night trains

Since May 2010, Arenaways has been running car and night trains from Hamburg and Düsseldorf to Alessandria in cooperation with DB AutoZug. For summer 2011 it is planned to connect Alessandria and Livorno with s-Hertogenbosch (near Arnhem) with car and night trains in cooperation with the Dutch company Euro-Express-Treincharter BV.

For its own night trains, Arenaways has rented three Talgo -Trenhotel sets from Renfe for a period of five years . These should run from Turin to Reggio Calabria and Bari .

Regional traffic Turin – Milan

The start of the ring traffic was intended for September 2010, but had to be postponed due to registration problems with the newly purchased passenger coaches and problems with the allocation of the timetable. On November 15, 2010 Arenaways was able to start operating with two daily pairs of trains Milano Rogoredo – Torino Lingotto, but with the restriction that instead of the planned 14 stations, only the 4 stations may be used. Only the stations in the major cities of Milan and Turin ( Milano Rogoredo , Milano Porta Garibaldi , Torino Porta Susa and Torino Lingotto ) may be served, as there are objections, according to press reports from Trenitalia, against competition with the existing regional trains by Arenaways. Since the existing regional trains are subsidized by the Piedmont and Lombardy regions, there are fears that the required subsidy amount would increase as soon as these trains are competing with the new offer. Therefore, Arenaways were only assigned timetable routes for a direct connection Milan - Torino without serving the intermediate stations. Despite this resistance, Giuseppe Arena announced that it was important to start operating the first private passenger transport by rail and that the fight for fair competition in passenger transport would continue. According to Arenaways, € 50 million has been invested in the fleet. The maintenance of the trains will take place in the workshop in Arquata Scrivia. As a first service improvement, the company was able to expand traffic to four pairs of trains on December 21, 2010. Interestingly, the first and last train of the day also runs on weekends, the other trains only from Monday to Friday. In the course of this change in the timetable, travel times could be reduced by up to 1:41 h between Torino Porta Susa and Milano Porta Garibaldi. The line connections have apparently been suspended since the bankruptcy filing.

service

Arenaways wants to offer regional transport at a high level with fast connections and modern and comfortable vehicles. The new vehicles offer passengers a lot of space with large spaces between the seats and face-to-face seating, and each train has a car with a snack bar and information and ticket counters. There is no division into 1st and 2nd class, a uniform, high-quality class is offered, seat reservations are mandatory and included in the fare.

Tickets

The ticket price for a single journey between Turin and Milan is € 17. For comparison: Trenitalia's InterCity tickets cost € 14.50 in second class and € 19.50 in first class. Customers can obtain tickets (at no extra charge) in three ways: via the company's website, on board the train (from machines or from the train staff) and from certain newspaper stands or "tabaccherias" at or next to the served stations.

vehicles

Locomotives

  • E 483: Three class 483 electric locomotives from the TRAXX family from Bombardier will initially be used . Four more locomotives of this type are to be added to these in 2010. These locomotives are mainly used for regional transport.
  • E 189: As a supplement to the TRAXX locomotives, two Siemens E 189 electric locomotives from the EuroSprinter family were procured in autumn 2010 . These should mainly be used in cross-border long-distance traffic, e.g. B. be used for night and car train services.
  • G 2000: Three Vossloh G 2000 BB diesel locomotives were procured especially for shunting work .
