Armand Marchant (born December 14, 1997 ) is a Belgian ski racer . He specializes in the disciplines of slalom and giant slalom .

biography

Marchant comes from Thimister in eastern Wallonia (between Liège and Aachen ). He learned to ski at the age of three. He joined the Malmedy Ski Club and, at the age of eight, was accepted into the Belgian Ski Association's support program. He has been trained by the former French ski racer Raphaël Burtin since 2009 . As a result, he won several junior championship titles and in 2013 came fifth at the Trofeo Topolino . Gradually he began to specialize in slalom and giant slalom.

As a 16-year-old Marchant began to participate in FIS races in December 2013 , where he started in all disciplines. The first appearances in the European Cup followed in November 2014. He made his debut in the World Cup on December 21, 2014 in the giant slalom in Alta Badia , where he did not finish in the first run. A month later he took part in the European Youth Olympic Festival in Malbun , where he won the bronze medal in the giant slalom. At the subsequent World Championships in 2015 in Vail , he finished 41st in the giant slalom. In March 2015 he won an FIS race for the first time. Eighth place was his best result at the 2016 Junior World Championships in Sochi .

Marchant was the youngest participant in the World Cup slalom on the Face de Bellevarde in Val-d'Isère on December 11, 2016. With the high starting number 65, he surprisingly finished 18th and was the first Belgian to ever win World Cup points. During the giant slalom in Adelboden am Chuenisbärgli on January 7, 2017, Marchant fell and broke the head of his shin on his left leg, after which he had to pause the rest of the season. Even in the two following winters he could not contest a single race; it even threatened the early end of his sports career. Finally, Marchant made his comeback in the Australia New Zealand Cup in August 2019 and scored three podiums (including a win), which was enough for third place in the overall standings.

On November 24, 2019, after an almost three-year hiatus, Marchant took part in World Cup races again, finishing in the points with 28th place in Levi's slalom . A few weeks later, he achieved his best ever World Cup result with 5th place in the Zagreb Slalom on January 5, 2020: With start number 40, he achieved the fastest time in the second run, and was only 20 hundredths of a second short of the podium.
