Arnaldo Calveyra

Arnaldo Calveyra (born February 23, 1929 in Gobernador Mansilla , Entre Ríos province , † January 15, 2015 in Paris , France ) was an Argentine playwright and writer.

Life

At the age of 14 Calveyra came to a secondary school in Concepción del Uruguay in 1943 and seven years later he went to study at the University of La Plata . In 1959 he successfully completed his studies and in the same year also had his successful debut as a writer. In the following year he was able to travel to France with a generous scholarship .

In 1961 he settled in Paris, where he lived until his death. He made the acquaintance of his compatriots Julio Cortázar and Alejandra Pizarnik and through them soon with French colleagues such as Laure Bataillon , Gaëtan Picon and Claude Roy . For some time he also worked there with Peter Brook .

In 1968 he married Monique Tur and had two children with her.

When the political situation in Argentina stabilized with the election of Raúl Alfonsín , there was also an upturn in the cultural sector. On the recommendation of the journalist Juan Gelman , the publisher José Luis Mangieri became aware of Calveyra and created a grateful audience for him in his home country with new editions of his books.
