Arno Peters' world map

Arno Peters (born May 22, 1916 in Charlottenburg ; † December 2, 2002 in Bremen ) was a German historian and cartographer .

Life

Arno Peters is the son of Bruno and Lucie Peters , who were among the earliest members of the Spartakusbund . After graduating from high school, he studied history, cultural history and newspaper studies in Berlin .

He created the synchronous optical world history , which puts European history on an equal footing with the history of the great Asian and African cultures as well as pre-Columbian America.

In the formation of the center Sprockhövel the IG metal a building should be incorporated, should be presented in the Synchronous Optical Peters world history. The publication of an atlas by Arno Peters was also planned in the GDR . Both projects have not been implemented for different reasons.

Likewise, Peters sought in his geographical work to overcome what he believed to be a Europe-centric worldview. In 1973 he presented a map projection of the earth ( Peters projection ), which was the basis of the Peters Atlas published in 1989 . The maps contained therein represent all countries and regions of the world approximately true to area.

Furthermore, Peters dealt with the concept of the equivalence economy as an economic system, which he saw as an alternative to the capitalist mode of production . The trade via free price formation by means of the market mechanism should give way to the equivalence principle according to an exchange of equivalent values. The basis of these values is the working time materialized in the products (see also relative wages ). In order for this mode of production to function in accordance with human needs, global planning of the economy is still necessary, which can now be realistically implemented using the most modern data processing technology. In this context he created the model of the Peters Rose .

Politically, Peters confessed to the left and he was therefore repeatedly attacked. He had been a member of the PEN Club since 1965 .

Peters was in his third marriage to Majenna, geb. Ruminski, married. They both had two children. His second marriage had a daughter and his first marriage had four children.
