Art Critics Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Art Critics Award is the only award for art criticism in Austria and was awarded six times between 2007 and 2017.

history

Originally initiated as an art project by the Austrian artist Moussa Kone, the Art Critics Award differs from other art criticism awards in terms of its focus. The work of art critics is rated here by an artist jury - not out of revenge, but to emphasize the importance that text has for art production. The often difficult working conditions of art critics are also financially supported with the prize money and art criticism is generally promoted.

Alignment of the price

There are several pleasant sides to this price. One of the most important things is that he does not regard the term art criticism as a clearly given, closed matter, but rather redefines it at every award ceremony. The starting point is not: there is an eternal field of art criticism, and that always produces new critics, and they are given a price. Rather, each time it is defined which sub-discipline, which particular function is required for art criticism, and someone is sought in this area. This is a very intelligent approach, and therefore the award should be passed on. (Diedrich Diederichsen)

The basis for the award is a three-month media observation , there is no active application process. Articles about contemporary art are filtered out of German-speaking media. Different focal points are set, ranging from art magazines to daily newspapers . Budding critics can only apply and submit a text for the Junior Art Critics Award. The winner can then publish the first articles in various art magazines.

The prize money was 3,000 euros for the main prize and 1,000 euros plus orders for articles for the junior prize. A famous laudator from the German-speaking area gave the speech for the winner, the award ceremony was held as a public event in Vienna . The festivities were accompanied by music from groups made up of art critics, such as the Art Critics Orchestra, La Stampa or Phantom / Ghost with Dirk von Lowtzow .

Lioba Reddeker , managing director of basis wien , was the main operator of the project. The Art Critics Award was organized by basis wien and the Kunstwerft association. In 2007 the ACA Reader was published, which gathers articles from a large number of well-known critics and explains the Art Critics Award in more detail.
