Arthur Erdle , also Artur Erdle (born May 24, 1889 in Cologne , † January 1, 1961 in Düsseldorf ), was a German painter , draftsman and graphic artist . Art history counts him among the lost generation .
Life
After taking private painting lessons in his hometown of Cologne in 1911/1912, Erdle studied - interrupted by military service in the First World War - at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1912 to 1918 . There were Willy Spatz , Carl Ederer and Adolf Maennchen his most important teacher. Then he worked as a freelance painter. In 1919 he was one of the founding members of the artists' association Das Junge Rheinland , from which he temporarily split off with other artists who united in the Rhine group . In the 1920s, Erdle traveled through Germany, Belgium, France and Spain. In 1924 his son Anno († 1984) was born, who also became a painter. In 1928 Erdle was a co-founder of the Rhenish Secession . He also joined the German Association of Artists . Erdle belonged to the circle around Johanna Ey , he was friends with Otto Dix , Max Ernst and Gert Wollheim . In 1929 the city of Nuremberg awarded him the Albrecht Dürer Prize . In 1937 15 of his works were confiscated as " degenerate art ". Nevertheless, he was able to take part in a number of exhibitions during the National Socialist era . In 1943 his house and studio were bombed out by air raids on Düsseldorf . After that he lived in Robertville (today East Belgium ) until 1945 , where the painter Peter Janssen also retired. After the Second World War , he found his feet again in Düsseldorf. During this time he was already exhibiting at Hella Nebelung on December 22, 1945 . In 1948 the city of Düsseldorf honored him with the Cornelius Prize .

Erdle initially oriented himself on the Impressionist painting of his time, on the art of Paul Cézanne and on Fauvism . Under the influence of the New Objectivity , he developed an expressive realism, which is particularly evident in his portraits and figure paintings from the 1920s. His landscapes show both impressionistic features and flat abstraction. His still lifes are influenced by old Dutch models. In addition to industrial representations, there are also drawings and watercolors with biblical themes in his work.
