Arthur Riedel (born February 1, 1888 in Pforzheim ; † August 29, 1953 in Basel , Switzerland ) was a German graphic artist, painter, etcher and bookplate artist who worked primarily in Basel and Karlsruhe but also for five years as a decorative and flat painter in Germany, Austria and Switzerland was active.

Life

Riedel was born in early 1888 as the son of a Pforzheim master locksmith, his family moved to Basel in 1889. Like his father, he should have been a craftsman, but because of his talent for drawing he was allowed to do an apprenticeship with a painter. At the same time he attended a class for painting and graphics with Fritz Schider at the drawing and modeling school of the trade school in Basel. He graduated from Moritz Heymann's drawing school in Munich and enrolled on November 4, 1908 at the academy there for the subject of drawing with Professor Peter Halm . He learned to etch autodidactically using templates and initially returned to Basel. He accepted an invitation to Karlsruhe and was an intern at the art school there , where he became a master student of Walter Conz . Riedel belonged to the circle of friends around Hans Thoma , in whose tradition he created etchings, especially portraits, landscapes and animal pictures. However, it was also stimulated by Fritz Boehle's art.

In 1913 Riedel went on a study trip to Italy. While he first succeeded as an etcher - primarily with scenes from Basel folklore and impressions from the Jura - and printed for colleagues, Riedel devoted himself more to oil painting after the First World War under the influence of Ernst Würtenberger . In 1914 he published seven lithographs and since 1915 tried his hand at nudes, figures and landscapes with strong colors.

Riedel was a member of the board of directors of the etcher association and the artist association in Karlsruhe. Some of his etchings ended up in the copper engraving cabinet there, in the copper engraving collection of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and in the art collection in Basel. By the end of 1915, around 120 etchings (ex-libris, compositions, heads and landscapes) were collected. He also brought out a cycle of etchings entitled Jura Fantasies , which he dedicated to Hans Thoma. Another cycle was created for Gerhart Hauptmann's drama The Sunken Bell and a series of etchings was created for Carl Spitteler's epic Olympic Spring . His works were represented in exhibitions in Basel, Rome, Hanover, Hamburg and Munich, and in 1916 and in the 1920s he participated in several group exhibitions at the Kunsthaus Zürich . From April 14 to May 12, 1951, works by him were on view together with those by Maria La Roche, Theodor Barth , and Emil Schill at the Basler Kunstverein.
