The aim of Stand Up to Cancer is to collect donations for research in translational medicine to fight cancer via the internet and television . The project was started on May 28, 2008 with a press release and the activation of a website. The central event of the campaign was a one-hour telethon , which was broadcast jointly by three major US television stations on September 5, 2008 and was also adopted by Canadian broadcasters. There celebrities who were or are affected by cancer themselves, such as Christina Applegate and Patrick Swayze, solicited support .

The TV show also featured the campaign song Just Stand Up! performed by some of the most famous American and British singers. Participated Mariah Carey , Beyoncé Knowles , Carrie Underwood , Rihanna , Miley Cyrus , Sheryl Crow , Fergie , Leona Lewis , Keyshia Cole , LeAnn Rimes , Natasha Bedingfield , Melissa Etheridge , Mary J. Blige , Ciara , Ashanti and Nicole Scherzinger . Following the broadcast, the single entered the charts not only in the United States, but also in Japan, Great Britain and Sweden, for example, although the project itself is limited to the United States. All the interpreters except Nicole Scherzinger are represented on the studio recording.
