Arvid Friedrich Graf Taube von Odenkat ( Swedish : Arvid Fredrik Taube af Odenkat ; born January 19, 1853 in Låssa socken , Uppsala län , Sweden ; † October 14, 1916 in Alingsås , Sweden) was a Swedish count , army officer , diplomat and Swedish foreign minister . He came from the German-Swedish-Baltic noble family of the " von Taube ".

Career

In 1877 Arvid Friedrich Taube passed his law firm exam in Uppsala , which was necessary to enter the civil service . In 1878 he was promoted to lieutenant in the "Mounted Life Guard" and at the same time began his service in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , in which he was appointed attaché for the foreign service in 1879 . After an intensive period of training in the Foreign Ministry, he became head of the political department and visited Paris , Rome , Saint Petersburg and London as the Swedish envoy . For a short time he was assigned to the acting State Secretary and later Foreign Minister August Gyldenstolpe as deputy. In 1900 he was promoted to major and held the post of State Secretary in the Foreign Office. In this position he was in diplomatic missions in Berlin , in the Kingdom of Bavaria , in the Kingdom of Saxony and in the Grand Duchy of Baden between 1900 and 1909 .

Foreign minister

As Swedish Foreign Minister, to which he was appointed in 1909, he was pro-German; he represented close cooperation between the Kingdom of Sweden and the German Empire - in order to be able to withstand an impending attack by the Russian Empire . With this attitude he initiated, also with the consent of the Swedish Prime Minister Arvid Lindman , general staff meetings between the Swedish chief of staff Knut Bildt and his German counterpart Helmuth von Moltke . These bilateral talks were unsuccessful because the Swedish government refused to stand on the side of the empire if war broke out. In 1911, Landman's government was replaced by new elections and Taube took over the office of ambassador in Berlin , he continued to be a supporter of the alliance with the German Empire. His political and diplomatic activities ended in 1912.

Awards

Arvid Taube was awarded the Swedish Royal Seraphine Order , the Prussian Red Eagle Order , the Danish Dannebrogden and the French Legion of Honor.
